Sligo Chamber urges Sligo County Council to support Regional Proposal on Knock Airport
Following a meeting of Sligo Chamber on 3 June 2015, the Chamber is urging its Local Representatives on Sligo County Council to support the regional proposal on Ireland West Airport Knock. Speaking after the meeting, Chamber President, David Kiely said, “We know that our Council is to discuss this issue at its next meeting on June 8th. International Air Access is a fundamental ingredient to our economic development and the Strategic Asset that is Ireland West Airport Knock forms an integral part of the wider infrastructural mix that we so urgently need. I strongly urge our elected representatives to support this regional initiative which offers the potential to deliver substantial economic opportunities for all of County Sligo and the North West Region of Ireland”.
Chamber CEO Paul Keyes said that “While it is regrettable that our International Airport at Knock cannot avail of the same level of state supports that are available to Dublin Cork and Shannon Airports, the fact of the matter is that this regional initiative must be allowed to happen. If Sligo County Council doesn’t deliver on its part of the initiative, our understanding is that the whole initiative falls. That would be a severe blow for all of us in the North West region of Ireland and a particular blow to us in Sligo where so much of our future economic development is contingent upon International Air Access for our tourism and other industries”.
